History

EARLY YEARS

Established as a vampyre and other-kin haven in the mid-1980's, the family story goes back to the late 1970's.

The family began in Southern Ontario, Canada. Toronto, Niagara Falls and Montreal, Quebec were the hot spots for our organization's culture and gatherings. Originally we were a group of like minded punks and rockers that thought outside the box and were completely committed to our night side ardor.

The original Patriarch Sire Terrence Lightfoot, of Mohawk Indian descent, was an activist for free speech and demonstrated a very strong sense of character and structure. As the years passed Sire Terrence developed quite a following; however, this also included law enforcement and clergy that did not understand his rituals or the association with vampirism. Terrence ultimately found himself  jailed for a prolonged sentence and the family had to grow in different directions.

After a few years of underground gatherings the family, though small in numbers and now under the leadership of Elder Julian DeBois. He had been know as a warlock and reader and grew up with Terrence, who embraced him during their years of teaching.

Elder Julian, a few years older than his friend, knew the importance of maintaining the energy within the community. He mandated that we keep two lives, a day life where we would maintain a positive community presence and a night side where we could share in the darkness with each other and allow our needs and desires to grow as a vampyre community. It was also agreed in order to further separate the two we would dress in Victorian, Fetish and like interest garb during our night side events.

This dark haven, although not formally named, grew in numbers and began to branch out as members moved and contiued to practice. Monthly gatherings and weekly parties at clubs held the family together despite distance. During this time Father Julian, along with his swan (Bella Venus) continued to organize rituals and teachings. He stressed that this was a community of real vampyres and as such we needed to enjoy our desires and needs as vampyres on the night side with as much commitement as we support our needs on the day side.

It was Father Julian that awakened Braumas, (who was renamed Alexander) and his swan that delivered the kiss. In the years to come, they together developed the family in trust, energy, sexuality, secrecy, pain, pleasure and spirituality. Father Alexander coined the phrase "There is no Pleasure without Pain", teaching that a vampyre is so in touch with ones self and their surroundings that pleasure and pain can only be experienced completely if you accept them as one.

Father Julian failed in health after an accident. During a promotion ceremony, he along with his beloved swan Venus, re-named Father Alexander as Lord Alistair - Patriarch of the family. Julian then asked to be blessed and that his scripts be marked for eternity. Though the scripts of this time were lost in a fire in the mid 1990's three members of the original house still gather for annual ceremonies.

The House was formally named House DarkHaven by Lord Alistair.

During the late eighties and nineties, Hollywood embraced vampires with open arms and trouble was less likely to follow us. Groups started to organize all over the world. One of the most popular was the Sanguinarium, which grew quickly and developed an entire language with which Vampyres could communicate. It was during this time of increased openness that Lord Alistair left Canada to travel south to the United States. He took with him several of his more dedicated family members, leaving Father Julian to watch over the Canadian family left behind.

Lord Alistair, along with Lady Olivia, Marquis, Arabella, Victoria and Xavier traveled throughout the eastern coast states and Florida, enjoying the club scene and a little discreet grazing. During their travels, they came to learn of many different groups and that the community was becoming somewhat organized.

There were however many role players, posers and fasion vamps that would othen lead to confusion and plenty of drama. "After all what would being a vampyre be with our the drama." Lady Olivia once added.

LATER YEARS

In the nineties everything seemed darkly perfect, with a strong family tradition of energy vampyres  (Psychic Vamps) developed by Marquis and Victoria in addition to Lord Alistair's  sanguine  practices. However, the rise of both blood-borne diseases such as AIDS as well as the increased fervor of the religious right shadowed the vampyre community. Tragedy befell Lord Alistair when his beloved concubine swan Lady Olivia was taken by an act of violence. A piece of his heart and the will to continue was lost.

The dayside began to overtake more of the family members time and wealth, leaving only three members to gather and share energy and rituals. HDH went dormant for six years.

In 1998 Marissa joined the family and brought a fresh spirit and energy to House DarkHaven. She soon after joined in a naming ceremony as Mistress Marissa, concubine swan to the house.

Mistress Marissa requested that, since the scripts were poor at best, she attempt to harvest our experiences and teachings in order to strengthen and grow our house. In June of 2005 Mistress Marissa became an elder in the house and requested not to take the title "Lady" for this was the Lady Olivias naming for eternity.

We have house members not only in Ontario, Canada, where it began, but in: Savannah, Georigia; West Palm Beach, Florida; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Nogales Mexico, Mexico.

We still have all the formalities of the house of 20 years ago and the same general beliefs and traditions. Time has not aged us, but deepened our understanding of and commitment to the darkness within.
